Juniors – Olympic Hopes Cup 2015 - Three Silvers for Our Boys!

14. 11. 2015

Košice (14.11.2015) The sports hall on Ostrovského Street hosted the 18th edition of the "Olympic Hopes Cup" international tournament. The renovated sports facility welcomed junior representatives from seven countries. On the home mats, we were represented by 8 wrestlers, with triple representation in the 84kg weight category. Coach Mgr. Juraj Dancák could not count on the current Slovak champion, Gabriel Tysz, who has health problems.

At the tournament, we had the honor of welcoming the Mayor of Košice, MUDr. Richard Raši. Our wrestlers were also supported by the President of US Steel Košice, a former wrestler, Scott D. Buckiso, and the Vice President of US Steel, Richard Shank. In the presence of the Chairman of the Košice Olympic Club and wrestling Olympian Miroslav Luberda, the President of the ZK Košice 1904 club, JUDr. Ján Tokár Jr., also presented an award to Jozef Lohyňa on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of winning the world champion title in Tokyo, 1990.

In the lowest weight category of 50kg, Peter Kundra met two Latvian opponents and two Slovak ones. After mutual matches, Peter was awarded 4th place. In the 60kg weight category, we had our first ace in the hole. Jakub Sýkora gradually dealt with a Hungarian representative and a wrestler from Nitra by technical superiority. In the semifinals, Kubo met the Romanian ASAN, whom he defeated by fall after a balanced first half. In the final, however, Kubo was no match for an opponent from Poland, OLENCZYN, to whom he lost on points. In the 66kg weight category, we were represented by Jozef Mesiarkin, who in the first two matches dealt with a wrestler from Kraśnik and Hungary. In the final, Jojo met the Latvian representative SAMUŠONOKS, to whom he lost on points. In the "74-kg," Róbert Szatmári won the third medal for Košice. In the first round, Robo easily dealt with a wrestler from Kraśnik and, after a bye, headed to the semifinals. His opponent was the Hungarian representative LUKÁCS, whom Robo defeated on points after a balanced duel. In the final, Robo measured his strength against the Polish representative KAMPIK, to whom he was no match and lost 0:10. In the most numerous weight category of 84kg, we most expected from the junior representative Ľuboš Kundrát. However, after losses to a Bulgarian and a Latvian wrestler, Ľubo said goodbye to the tournament. His two colleagues, Hany Al-Kubati and Roman Peťák, also failed to succeed in the tournament and were eliminated after two losses. In the 96kg weight category, Matúš Sýkora did not perform as he would have imagined. After three losses, he was left with the last, fourth place in the weight class.

In the club evaluation, the Košice boys were only one point behind the third team from Poland. The winning club was the representation of Hungary, ahead of the Bulgarian Ruse. The prizes were presented by the club's vice-president, Ján Tokár Sr. js

Congratulations to all the boys and we look forward to the next edition!
