Older Pupils - In "Greco," we have two more Slovak champions - J. Sýkora and Ľ. Kundrát

28. 11. 2012

Košice, Gabčíkovo (November 28, 2012) - Jakub Sýkora (up to 54 kg) and Ľuboš Kundrát (up to 73 kg), older pupils of the Wrestling Club (ZK) Košice 1904 and students of the Sports Gymnasium in Košice, became Slovak champions in Greco-Roman wrestling in their respective weight categories on Saturday. Congratulations!

At the domestic championship in Gabčíkovo, they found no rivals even in the final and confirmed their quality preparation in training. Their victories are all the more significant because our club specializes in freestyle and pays attention to the classic style only in the period before championship competitions.

An 11-member delegation from Košice traveled to Gabčíkovo, which in the end also celebrated first place in the team evaluation. ZK Košice 1904 won with 29 points, just two points ahead of the home team ZŠK Gabčíkovo, which, it must be acknowledged, competed with six wrestlers. The boys from Vihorlat Snina finished in third place, four points behind second-place Gabčíkovo.

The largest participation of ZK Košice 1904 wrestlers at the championship might lead one to think about a broad membership base in the youngest age categories in our club. But ZK Košice 1904 coach Miroslav Jedlička reminds us: "Yes, we had the most boys in the competition, but, for example, only in the 73 kg category, where four competed. And I will always advocate for the weaker ones to compete as well, because only in this way will they learn to wrestle. And I don't think we have a broad base, just that the others have almost none. Overall, it is very weak in Slovakia."

According to the coach, all our boys gave their standard performances. "No one surprised me, I was sorry about Robo Szatmári's loss to Gáal, but it was only 'Greco,' so it doesn't bother me that much." But despite the two gold medals, the coach was not entirely satisfied: "As long as I don't return from such competitions with at least three golds, it will still be too little. But the first place of the team surprised me, I didn't expect it at all."
