The name of the absolute winner of the Košice Sports Personality 2011 poll will be known to the public in less than two months, and for now, even the organizers themselves are not clear on who the "number one" will be, but the definitive "roster" of the ten-member team, from which the winner of the main trophy will emerge, has been known for some time.
KOŠICE. It was a slightly more modest year for significant international successes or medals from world or European championships, but the members of the Košice Sports Academy had plenty to choose from in the "Top 10" category. Not only medalists from individual sports were on offer, but several followers of team sports also had strong arguments for their inclusion.
Medals were the trump card
Let's take it alphabetically, because the order in the "Top 10" is not determined. Athlete Katarína Bérešová, who recently met the standard for the Olympic marathon in London, definitely deserves a place in it. For bodybuilder Jaroslav Horváth, his excellent 4th place among professionals at the world-famous Olympia speaks for itself, and Slovak wrestling can rarely boast such a success as that achieved by ZK Košice 1904 freestyle wrestler Jakub Kačeňák at the World Championships. In strong competition from wrestlers from post-Soviet countries, he placed 8th, and a place in the elite ten always counts for a lot in the wrestling world. That there is also a hockey player in the Košice top 10, this time Ján Tabaček, is no wonder; a member of the most popular Košice sports team cannot be missing. The Good Angels basketball players are also diligently competing with him in popularity, and Lucia Kupčíková from their squad has made it into the "Top 10". We have not forgotten the handball representatives either, as they have been doing so well among the world's sevens in recent years. Pivot Martin Mazák earned a nomination to the best Košice ten. The water polo hornets also have representation in it. And who else should be there if not the best Slovak water polo player of 2011, Peter Nižný? Kickboxing is still a bit in the background, but a silver from the World Championships is a strong trump card for Steel Trans competitor Ladislav Tóth. Orienteering has a solid background in Košice, and every international success should be appreciated. That is why Jozef Pollák, a gold medalist from the World Veterans Championships, is also in the "Top 10". And another bodybuilder, Rastislav Solár, whose muscles were gilded at this year's World Championships in the super heavyweight category.
So, there you have it. We will soon inform you about the laureates of the other categories, "Hope" and "Legend," and for now, we just remind those who want to participate in the online voting for "ŠOK Fan" that they can do so until December 31st, when the website www.sportovaosobnost.sk is open. Your vote could also be decisive...
