Preparatory, Younger Pupils - The Mikuláš Athanasov Memorial 2016 is successfully behind us

03. 12. 2016

December 5, 2016 (Košice) Our youngest wrestlers celebrated St. Nicholas on the mats. First, each of them received a St. Nicholas package, and then it was off to the fights. Over 140 wrestlers from 7 countries (17 teams) created an excellent atmosphere during the duels, which were held in honor of the successful Košice wrestler, Mikuláš Athanasov, who won a bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

The matches took place in 3 age categories, with the youngest fighters being only 5 years old! The originally city-level competition has grown into an international one, thanks mainly to the youth coach Mgr. Miroslav Jedlička, who invited colleagues from Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Olympic medalist, world champion, and head coach of ZK Košice, Jozef Lohyňa: "It has been confirmed that dedicating oneself to children, preparatory and youth wrestlers, has its own charm and brings joy to the hearts of parents and coaches, and of course, the competitor after a victorious match. The tears after a lost match also had their charm, as sport is not just about victories on the mat. The very fact that the children came to our wrestling gym on this day makes them winners in their own way!" J. Lohyňa briefly summarized after the tournament. Of course, the president of the club, JUDr. Ján Tokár Jr., was also present, who praised the way coaches M. Gardoš and M. Sciranka coached our young hopefuls. At the same time, he expressed praise for everyone who participated in the preparation and especially in the perfect course of the tournament. The chairman of the Košice Olympic Club, Miroslav Luberda, many parents, and fans of wrestling, who filled the wrestling hall to the last seat, also came to encourage the children.

Our younger pupils contributed with great performances, especially Filip Titka and Viktor Váňa, who won gold. But the others did not get lost either, and we congratulate them on their performances and are already looking forward to the next year together!
