Seniors - 2nd Annual J. Svoboda Memorial – Bodnár is Silver!!!

13. 05. 2016

Košice, Bratislava (May 13-14, 2016) Dunajplavba Bratislava, as last year, also organized a senior tournament this year, which bears the name of the former president of the Slovak Wrestling Federation, "Jozef Svoboda Memorial." The international tournament was officially opened in the presence of the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Peter Plavčan, and members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. Almost 100 wrestlers participated in the second edition of the tournament. In addition to Slovak freestyle wrestlers, wrestlers from 12 countries also attended: Hungary, Poland, Romania, Belarus, Austria, Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Argentina, and England, which speaks to the quantity, but also the quality of the tournament. Košice wrestlers also took part in the fights, under the leadership of coach Jozef Lohyňa and assistant Marek Sciranka.

The tournament was of a high level, with over 10 wrestlers competing in 6 weight categories. It was fought in a two-loss competition system, which ensured more matches for our boys.

The lightest of our wrestlers competed in the 65 kg weight category, Jakub SÝKORA, who, after a loss in the first round to a German representative, could only fight for bronze. After two victorious matches in the B group, a loss to a Pole came, so Jakub was eliminated just before the match for third place.

In the 74 kg weight category, Matej DEÁK competed, who entered the tournament very well and, after a few "hammers," defeated a Lithuanian representative. Subsequently, after a balanced match, a loss to a Finn came. In the B group, Matej ran into a German, whom he was no match for, and a second loss came, which meant the end of this tournament.

The 86 kg weight category had triple representation. Jozef TAKÁCS lost in the first round to a Pole and subsequently in the B group to an Austrian wrestler. Martin SCIRANKA in this weight category won in the opening match against a Macedonian, but in the second round, he lost to his teammate Mišo Bodnár. In the B group, he immediately managed to win, and then, after a bye, an Austrian awaited him. After a balanced fight, he managed to win. In the fifth match, Martin was no match for a German and lost after a fighting performance. He was eliminated just before the match for bronze. The last of the Košice wrestlers, Michael BODNÁR, after four victories, was the only one to fight his way to the final, where a wrestler from the ZK Olymp club, originally from Russia, awaited him. The final started well for Mišo, where after a tactical first period, he was winning on passivity 1:0. But in the second period, after a completed attack by his opponent, Mišo could not defend the parterre, and with a "koršun," Boris Makoev gained points. After a loss by technical superiority, he takes home a silver medal from the tournament.

In the 97 kg weight category, the last representative of the club, Matúš SÝKORA, competed, who won in the first round by fall and then had a bye. In the semifinals, however, he was no match for the eventual winner of the weight class, Matejov from Bratislava. Matúš, like his brother in the B group, lost to a Polish representative and thus did not advance to the fight for third place. mb

The boys gave fighting performances and brought home valuable experience from the tournament.
