ŠOK - ZK Košice 1904 Won the 2012 Sports Team of the Year Poll

07. 03. 2013

Košice (March 7, 2013) - Our Wrestling Club (ZK) Košice 1904 won the Sports Personality of Košice 2012 poll in the Sports Team category. The Sports Personality of Košice (ŠOK) award is given to an athlete or team chosen by the Košice Sports Academy (KŠA) based on their exceptional sporting qualities and results.

The award was received by the president of ZK Košice 1904, Ján Tokár Jr., at a gala evening at the Hotel Yasmin in Košice on the last Saturday of February. "In sports, it is also the case that bad news is followed by good news. And to win the poll for the 'best' club in Košice, among clubs such as, for example, Good Angels in basketball, or HC Košice in hockey, is also a shock, but a positive one. It is a recognition not only for the work in 2012, but also for the previous years," J. Tokár Jr. told our portal.

"Few sports in Košice have such a rich and successful history as wrestling. The official year of the origin of wrestling in Košice is 1904, which is also considered the year of the birth of organized wrestling in Slovakia. The Lokomotíva Košice Wrestling Club was founded in 1945, when wrestling enthusiasts, grouped around the later doyen of wrestling Ladislav Nagy, decided to found their own wrestling family, and immediately in 1946, after the establishment of TJ Lokomotíva Košice, they joined its ranks. During its nearly 70-year existence, the club has achieved many successes. Among its protégés are many champions of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia and representatives, including the legendary Mikuláš Athanasov. Currently, the club, along with Dunajplavba Bratislava, is one of the most important wrestling clubs in Slovakia," stated the organizers of the ŠOK poll on their website www.sportovaosobnost.sk regarding the award for ZK Košice 1904, which is the legal successor of ZK Lokomotíva Košice and claims the tradition and successes of this wrestling club.

In the ŠOK Team category, the KŠA recognizes the sporting successes of Košice clubs in the past season, as well as long-term work with youth, and the promotion of a good name beyond the city's borders. In 2011, Good Angels was declared the most successful sports team in Košice, the year before the water polo team ČH Hornets, and in 2009, when the ŠOK poll premiered, the hockey team HC.
