Košice (April 14, 2012) - Freestyle wrestler of our Wrestling Club (ZK) Košice 1904, a student of the Sports Gymnasium in Košice, Róbert Szatmári, won the title of Slovak champion in the 53 kg weight category at the Slovak Older Pupils Championships on Saturday on home mats in the Social Pavilion, thus defending last year's first place in this category from November in Trenčín.
Unfortunately, from the eleven-member competitive field of our ZK, R. Szatmári was the only one who managed to step onto the highest step for the gold medal. Ľuboš Kundrát in the 73 kg weight category was closest to it, losing in the final to B. Hegedüs from Gabčíkovo and winning silver. Bronze medals for third places went to Roland Vojkovský (up to 59 kg), Jakub Miňo (up to 66 kg), and Matúš Sýkora (up to 73 kg).
"The tournament was of a good level, I struggled with some opponents and I also made quite a few mistakes, which I almost paid for. But in the end, it turned out well and I advanced to the final. However, I underestimated my opponent a bit, which is why he also scored the first point against me, but then I started wrestling and won," R. Szatmári told our website.
In the overall team standings, our ZK Košice 1904 finished in 2nd place behind Vihorlat Snina with a loss of nine points, as 16 boys from under Vihorlat competed in the championship, five more than the Košice team. In total, 91 older pupils from 16 clubs competed in the Social Pavilion, a beautiful and dignified venue for a top wrestling event.
