Košice, Terezín (April 24, 2013) - To gain as much experience as possible and try to cause an upset - that was the goal of the six-member delegation of older pupils from the Wrestling Club (ZK) Košice 1904 at the international tournament in Terezín, Poland, in mid-April. The first goal was achieved, the second not even close, coach Marek Sciranka could conclude upon his return. Only Matúš Sýkora's fifth place among the cadets satisfied the coach's demands.
177 competitors from Belarus, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, the United States, and Ukraine took part in the largest tournament for older pupils in Poland. In addition to older pupils, preparatory wrestlers also competed in three weight categories (up to 26, 28, and 32 kg) and cadets (up to 85 and 100 kg). "The tournament had a high organizational level, as well as a social and cultural environment, and political representatives of regional structures showed great interest in it. The final duels were directed by Belarusians, Russians, and Ukrainians; Poles appeared in them twice, and Germans and Americans were represented in the final by one boy each. We have a gap in the younger and older pupil categories that we are not yet able to fill. It is a little better in the preparatory category, but the boys need to attend many, many competitions," said coach M. Sciranka.
Placements of our competitors:
Preparatory: Up to 28 kg (13 starters): ...9. Filip Titka.
Older Pupils: Up to 47 kg (15): ...12. Karol Kondáš. Up to 59 kg (25): ...12. Gabriel Fischer, 19. Hany Al-Kubaty. Up to 73 kg (11): ...10. Samuel Mochnáč.
Cadets: Up to 85 kg (14): ...5. Matúš Sýkora.
And how did coach M. Sciranka evaluate these results? "Filip wrestled three matches - he won once, lost twice. He was the second youngest in the weight class and it was his first time at such a big tournament. I am mostly satisfied. The losses are disappointing, but he fought. He was thrown into the deep end.
Karol had the same record. He lost the first match due to his own mistake, otherwise he would have been at least in 5th place. He had more potential, but he has major training gaps and that was reflected in his performance.
Gabi also had the same record in three matches - one win and two losses. I am not satisfied with his performance; in the second match against a competitor from the USA, he left his fighting heart in the locker room. It was an even opponent whom he should have defeated. It showed what we are lacking - self-confidence, determination. He didn't show what he is capable of in the third duel either. Fear of his opponent tied his hands and feet.
Paradoxically, Hany also won once and lost twice. It was a strong tournament for him, he was gaining experience. But I expected more fighting spirit from him.
What Samuel showed was a disaster. Two pinfall losses...
Matúš is a goal-oriented boy who wrestled one weight class higher, even though he knew it wouldn't be easy. He simply wanted to go to the competition. He fought as best he could. He gave the best performance of all of us, even though he also lost twice, but he also recorded the same number of wins. He deserves praise not only for the matches, but also for his overall approach."
