Košice, Bucharest (June 20-26, 2016) The Junior European Championships were held this year in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, to which two Košice representatives representing our country traveled. This year's championships ended with freestyle, which was the peak of the season for our juniors Jakub SÝKORA and Gabriel TYSZ.
In the 60kg weight category, Jakub SÝKORA, in a competition of 22 wrestlers, met Georgian Giorgi Sulava in the first round. He was no match for him, and with a loss by technical superiority, Jakub had to wait for the result of his opponent's fight in the next rounds. The Georgian was no match for the Russian representative in the semifinal, and thus Jakub's participation in this year's European Championships ended. He finished in 19th place in the overall ranking.
In the 96kg weight category, Gabriel TYSZ, in a competition of 15 wrestlers, met another Georgian, Givi Matcharashvili, in the qualification round. He managed to make one attack, but it was not enough to win the match, and so he lost 2:10. Unlike Jakub, Gabi's opponent advanced to the final, and a second chance came in the form of a repechage with the German Ilja Matuchin. The match was lengthy due to the treatment of both Gabi and his opponent. In the end, this fight ended with a score of 4:7 against the Slovak representative, and Gabi did not take advantage of the opportunity to fight for a bronze medal.
It's a shame about these losses. For Gabi, it was his last year among the juniors, but Jakub will have a chance to make amends next year! mb
